How To Create A Budget For Your Kitchenset Renovation – FYI: Our recent sale has been very popular and the best colors are sold out. More updates and reviews here: Read More

When Collective agency Orlando Soria first started renovating his Spanish-style cottage in Los Angeles, he had a budget-friendly kitchen remodel idea on his brain. “The whole place is white and lacks character,” he said. “I know that the right color is an easy way to add flavor to a space.”

For Orlando, this means covering the walls in Grayish, a soft shade of gray with green undertones, and covering the ceiling and ceiling with a new coat of warm white. “The gray almost reads like a green Robin’s Egg, instantly filling the room with vintage charm,” she says.

Once the backsplash was in place, we relied on a variety of cost-effective DIY projects—from painting to inexpensive lighting and replacing appliances—to update the kitchen without breaking the bank.

After filling the kitchen walls with Grayish, Orlando covered the ceiling and baseboards with Creamy White Whipped White to create a sense of contrast. Instead of traditional crown molding, he also used Whipped to paint thick strips where the walls and ceiling meet to create the same look at a fraction of the cost. “Painting faux trim is so easy and makes such a big difference,” she says. “Just follow the lines of the upper cabinets to create a line using the same color as the ceiling.”

To get more storage space without calling in a contractor, Orlando installed floating shelves on the kitchen wall instead of expensive upper cabinets. “I wanted a place to store the essentials on the arm, but also to display something nice,” she says. “The shelves are cheap pieces of wood from the hardware store that I painted with Danish oil.” To create a salon-like scheme, she recommends starting with larger items, such as framed art, serving dishes and lamps, and then filling in with smaller pieces such as plates, bowls and accents. . “That way, the shelves look decorative but still work well,” he says.

To incorporate the washer and dryer into the overall design, Orlando designed a convenient laundry space. “I added two rows of floating shelves that I reinforced with wire,” he says. “It gives the area a cool industrial look while providing enough support for heavy storage baskets and cleaning equipment.”

In addition to installing floating wooden shelves throughout the kitchen, Orlando relied on a medley of natural finishes to warm up the neutral space. “The countertops and backsplash are quartzite, and the floor is faux marble,” he says. “An eclectic mix of materials creates a more elemental balance – just like in nature.”

Orlando used small and budget-friendly decorating ideas to decorate the kitchen without overspending. For starters, he stripped the worn-out cabinet knobs from the brass hardware he found on sale, and then replaced all the light bulbs in the space with ice. “Light bulbs can be harsh, but cool bulbs emit a soft warm light,” he says. “When placed in a white light, the cold bulb helps blend the lighting into the ceiling to create a more harmonious look.”

No special skills are required to change the same. Whether you’re a beginner or a budget savvy person, you can continue to use the kitchen after the bits are done. It’s fun too. Now that the kitchen is as good as finished, I want to share tips on how to change your kitchen without tearing the body apart and starting from scratch. DIY, budget kitchen remodeling, here we come!

Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

We stuck with what we had and never changed the layout of our kitchen. However, if we were starting from scratch or had the time/inclination/budget, I would have changed the layout a bit.

Our kitchen is a Victorian terrace kitchen. The space was not used properly. If you really want the best out of a small kitchen, the flat pack is not the way to go. You need special cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. Let’s face it, with the best of intentions, you’ll end up dropping something on top of the cabinet and getting dirty. The kitchen will also look cluttered, making it even smaller.

If you are starting from scratch, keep this in mind. Or if you can be bothered, match the existing cabinets to make full use of the wall. Build up! Think Singapore.

The photo below shows my kitchen in the morning (in the best light, because the window faces east) and as you can see, it is still dark.

How To Design A Timeless, Classic Kitchen

This picture was taken in March, so the light is not bright, but the cabinet to the right of the window blocks a lot of natural light.

Removing the cabinets on the right side and replacing them with open shelves can make better use of the space. This layout will allow light to fill the room, without losing valuable storage space. A common concern with open shelving is that everything can get dusty and/or greasy. However, if the shelf is not too close to the cooker, oil should not be a problem. As for dust, don’t fill your shelves with decorations, use them for your everyday items (way to invest in good, new dishes!) and you’ll be washing them regularly .

We decided to leave the cabinet as it is now. Removing them requires repair work on the wall and we can’t be bothered with that. But if we have time, this small change will increase the feeling of light and space. The overall effect is the feeling of a larger room.

A quick fix to enhance the light is to add a mirror. Some well-placed mirrors will help bounce light around the room.

Small Kitchen Ideas That Make The Most Of A Tight Space

We removed the glossy white laminate coating from IKEA MDF cabinets. This allowed us to paint them in a softer shade, more in line with our home’s color palette.

You can read the full blog about laminate removal here. In short, the heat from a hair dryer or blow dryer is all you need to remove the laminate. Seal the MDF cabinets before painting with a permanent paint (we used Intelligent Satinwood from Little Greene). I prefer eggshell or satin for the kitchen. Chalky or matte paints get dirty very quickly, because they cannot be rubbed off very quickly.

I found this part of the transformation really fun and did a little bit every day. I didn’t remove the door because there was no need to take any extra steps, and we could continue using the kitchen as usual. Be sure to check what material the cabinet is made of – and whether such material is suitable for painting – before attacking it with a hair dryer.

Tiles (and tiles!) are expensive and if you already have decent tiles in your kitchen, give them new life by changing the grout color. We originally went from white to dark gray and then during this remodel we went to a lighter gray.

How To Paint Laminate Cabinets

Read my blog about using pens here. Grout pens are perfect for DIY, budget kitchen renovations because you need zero skill to use them and make renovations quick and efficient.

You can also pick up tile paint or cover your tiles with vinyl to quickly fix where you don’t like the color. We didn’t do this because our tiles are neutral white subway tiles.

I really like our ‘new’ office. Our old, marked and scratched countertops are black laminate with a granite grain and, in a dark kitchen, they are distressing. Given that it was a DIY, budget kitchen renovation, replacing them was out of the question. Instead, we used Ribbeck Oak effect sticky-back vinyl from D-C-Fix, available here. I followed the Create Your World guide to apply the vinyl but I’ve included some tips below.

Canals are difficult and I had to do ours twice. My first attempt was a complete mess (good to order extra vinyl!)

Ways To Redo Kitchen Cabinets Without Replacing Them

Use the guide on the back of the vinyl to see where the gutters are and cut out the rough template. Place the vinyl over the duct and smooth it as much as possible around the duct, before cutting off the excess with a sharp knife. If you get water on the vinyl (made a small bubble hole) it should come back after 24 hours. Don’t give up – leave it overnight and try again the next morning.
