Kitchenset Makeover: Before And After

Kitchenset Makeover: Before And After – It took a year to get this space to where we wanted it to be, but it was worth every bead of sweat, penny, and second. Our modern farmhouse kitchen inspiration has finally come to life!

This was taken before we put any money down, so not only is it decorated, it’s also very dirty (especially the floors)!

Kitchenset Makeover: Before And After

This happened about 3 months after I moved into the house. Very nicely decorated, my photography was lacking (seriously, what was my deal…wasn’t this even a year ago?), but you get the picture. The walls are white, the cabinets are hardware-free, and there’s no backsplash, but at least it’s lightly decorated.

A Small Kitchen & Laundry Room Makeover That Made A Big Impact

What you really focus on here is the kitchen table lamp. The builders installed it very close to the sliding door. See how far from the center? My guess is that they only meant space for a small round table, but this is a spacious 4-bedroom house, so I’d call this decision a half-baked one. We needed a nice, farmhouse kitchen table focal light here.

Although Kev and his dad were very confident in their ability to move the box, they are not drywall experts, so we hired them. It’s a huge focal point in our home and we wanted to make it perfect.

Money well spent. The whole project took one guy about 4 hours and cost us $220. He removed the bad builder grade fixture, patched the old hole, cut a new one, moved the electrical box and installed our fixture. The area was clean and only required some painting over the patch.

The first DIY project we tackled was replacing the kitchen chairs. We went for a more modern look than the frosted builder lights. We also have a few more copper accents, so these new copper and black cage lights were perfect!

A Play Kitchen Makeover

Before replacing the lights, Kev and his dad installed dimmers on several light fixtures, including the kitchen island lights. Another free DIY upgrade.

Now our kitchen table and island lights complement each other when you look at the kitchen! Behind me is our living room ceiling fan, a three mason jar light cooker. They’re all different, but work together for a modern farmhouse aesthetic!

Also, check out the hog curtains I have hanging over the kitchen sink window. We have since modified it to test kitchen valence, which you can see here.

While I’m usually the resident artist, we decided this size job was for the pros. Since this house is a long-term home, we wanted it to look immaculate, so we hired a reputable area crew. A friend of ours runs a local Sherwin Williams and recommended them – we couldn’t be happier with their work!

Our back splash guy was booked before the painters arrived. This was a problem because we removed the 4 inch backsplash that fits the counter top in order to install the tile up to the counter. We didn’t even splash the walls in the kitchen, so it needed a light coat of paint when the pros came in for a clean look.

Our rear shock guy explained how to remove it easily with a box cutter, multi-tool and a hammer. After a verbal explanation, I was able to solve it myself within an hour, and I’m sure you can too!

First, cut a 4-inch strip of adhesive from the top of the backsplash and gradually secure the multi-tool between the backsplash and the drywall. A gentle tap on the hammer allows the tool to gradually move down and separate. Do this every few inches. The more surface area the multitool touches, the better.

Most importantly, make sure you don’t hit the drywall too hard. Fortunately, we have artists behind us, but if you want to make it yourself, save the extra cleanup for later. If you look at the photo below, the furthest left hole is actually

On the coffee bar counter, we found that the original counter installers had cut a corner (or line). For whatever odd reason, the counter will disconnect from the wall after it sinks in. This was the only problem that we builders didn’t address, but since our back splash project was under budget, we could hire a professional.

The mini project involved removing the entire counter from that section (even though it was our smallest section). A local expert we hired melted a piece of one of the 4 inch rear fenders we removed to the main body and put it in place. It was $200, but not only did we save a lot on the projects we hired, but it wasn’t that much considering the projects we hired very little.

You might know you’re really looking at it here, but otherwise you’d never know there’s a piece missing from the counter.

We have a full account of how it came about. The pantry accent wall is easily one of my favorite features! I’ve been telling everyone since I moved in how I plan to darken that wall to contrast with the cabinets.

Note: the floors are the same, but in the before photo they are dirty because it was clean before the move.

But otherwise… guess what? How does the ultimate farmhouse kitchen fit your expectations? What was your favorite update? Let me know in the comments!

You know how sometimes you have an idea for a design and then when you try to create your own, it turns out just like you thought it would?!  And are you really surprised?

Kids Modern Play Kitchen Makeover

I had a lot of anger in my life.  This may sound a little dramatic, but really, it was a big problem for me.  The problem was my kitchen table…or rather the chairs!  It was one of the most boring and embarrassing pieces of furniture in my house because it was impossible to keep the seats clean.  I hated it.  Hated!  Sure, they were cleanable, but I had to clean them after every meal to keep them!  Do you know how many minutes of my life have been wasted trying to save my kitchen table chairs?  Funny!  Needless to say, with 6 kids, I lost hope for clean seats for several years.  And I gave up!

Since I hate chairs so much, I have had the idea of painting the kitchen table for a long time.  But I was afraid because I knew it would be a process.  And then I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with the colors/fabrics.  I can sometimes be very indecisive in my choices and I get very angry with myself for it.  With the move to a new house, I thought about bringing this old hideous piece of furniture into my beautiful new home!

When I saw this chevron stripe duck fabric set at Hobby Lobby, I knew it was meant to decorate my kitchen table!  SCORE!  This got me excited and started making plans.

The first step in updating my kitchen table was preparation.  Preparation is the worst job!  UGH.  But this is absolutely the most important thing!  Never slack off on preparation.  I learned the hard way.  If you are painting old furniture, you need to make sure that the item is clean, clean, clean.  So I cleaned and scraped off all the cracks and crevices that had accumulated over the years.  It took forever.  After finishing, I lightly sanded the pieces with 120 grit.  There is nothing important to remove a little shine and stick to the paint.

I started with a DIY chalk paint recipe.  This was my first experience with chalk paint.  I thought chalk painting the table would be the best way to go since the weather wasn’t conducive to painting in the garage or outdoors.  i a
