Kitchenset Ideas For A Mediterranean Look – After over a year of planning, designing and building our dream DIY “modern Mediterranean” kitchen is complete! This update was truly a labor of love – certainly the most hours we put into a project, and the most skill-intensive. Now that it’s over, I feel like I can tackle anything!
First, let’s go back to the beginning and remember how this house started at Hacienda Hideaway. It was an awkward, closed kitchen in the middle of the great room. Within days of buying the house, we immediately tore it down:

Don’t look too close to the background – the rest of the house is still a construction zone (hello, missing the baseball).
Modern Kitchens That Feel Fresh And Current
Let’s talk about these cabinets. I’m still amazed that we were able to fit everything like that with 1/16″ exposed. Shout out to New Cabinet Doors for providing doors, drawers and hardware that make installation even easier!
Hidden behind the doors on the right is this Jenn-Air panel-ready refrigerator. There are surprisingly few deals on 36″ countertop refrigerators, so this was the biggest kitchen break so far (luckily I was able to take advantage of a 40% off sale from a co-worker, and the price has since gone up!):
The range, hood insert and dishwasher are all from Z-LINE. They were the cheapest white electrics I could find, with reviews, and so far they have not disappointed!
I chose the 36″ DuraSnow Dual Fuel Range in White and the matching High Control Energy Star White Dishwasher.
Kitchen Styles To Know When Designing Your Cooking Space
To the right of the dishwasher, we made an open bed and found this cute retro microwave (small but it holds large plates!) in the center of the island with a 30″ Elkay Farmhouse Sink + DIY Drip Outlet:
I had a hard time finding cheap copper/gold grills and matching hardware, so I went with unslatted clay. Yes, there is some maintenance involved, but the patina is truly charming and timeless.
I’ve sourced some of the most reasonably priced raw copper bridge mats and pot fillers you can find on Etsy.
Both the lantern and the pendant light were quickly made using gold leaf rubber. Check out the ogee edge detailing on the Hanstone Quartz top and it’s worth every penny!
Kitchen Christmas Decor Ideas To Try This Season
The hand-painted style backsplash tiles are made in Spain and bring such character to the space. Hallelujah for replacing drill points in the background!
I decided at the last minute to install pot rails under the DIY floating shelf and I’m so glad I did! They definitely give me old world European vibes.
The counter stools were a World Market find and I think they are perfect for this space. The natural texture helps balance out all the hard and shiny surfaces.

As promised, here is the full cost of the items (materials + labor). Note that these line items include the retail value of the materials used. Some of these items are available for free or at a discount for free posts – I’ll also share our actual costs below.
*We hired an electrician for several jobs throughout the house at one time, so this is just an estimate of what the kitchen area will look like.
*I didn’t include the ceiling or floors as these are part of the main room/whole room and not specific to the kitchen.

After grants and discounted items, our actual total is close to $23 million. Our initial budget estimate is higher than that, so we’re happy with that number! Even if it took half a year longer to complete than we expected
We also sold the old cabinets, counters and appliances from the original kitchen for $65,000 to help offset our expenses.
Of course, we saved the most by DIYing—we built the cabinets and range hood from scratch, along with a lot of finishing touches. If we were to outsource these particular jobs, we would probably be looking at at least another $25-30 million in labor costs.
Thanks to everyone who has followed our progress and supported us along the way! It’s been a pleasure documenting these projects and sharing them with you. Now that that’s out of the way, it’s time to get back to our home to change out the overdue laundry. More next week!
