When I move into a new house, I always unpack the kitchen first. My goal is to have breakfast at home the next morning. I want to be able to use real dishes, silverware and glasses in my home for the second day. I might not cook a big meal for a few days, but we can eat cereal and sandwiches and instantly feel “steady”.

Kitchen Design Tips For A Kitchen Where You’ll Love To Cook
I start by placing the glasses in the cabinet closest to the refrigerator. Since you usually take a glass from the cupboard and a drink from the fridge, it makes sense to place the glasses near the fridge. If you have small children, put their cups in a lower cabinet near the fridge so they can get their own cups. The same strategy works for placing coffee cups: place them near the coffee machine, as well as where the coffee, filters, cream and sugar are located.
Ideally, I place my plates and bowls in the cupboard between the dishwasher/sink and the kitchen counter. If this is not possible, decide which cabinet is better for your dishes, near the dishwasher or near the table. Again, use the same strategy using the lower cabinet for toddler plates and bowls.
This arrangement of dishes saves you time either when you eat dishes out, since the cabinet is closer to the table, or when you put them away, since it is closer to the dishwasher. If I have a choice, I prefer the dishes to be closer to the table so that when the kids help me set the dining table, they don’t get in my way in the main part of the kitchen.
Next, the silverware is placed. There is usually one drawer big enough to hold a silver tray. If you’re lucky enough to have more than one large silverware-type drawer, choose the one closest to your dining table or dishwasher/sink. Again, I personally try to choose the table closest to the table to minimize how much the kids are in my way while making dinner and setting the table.

These first 3 are the “big” of the first degree. By first finding cups, dishes, and silverware, I’m ready for my family to eat in our new home. If that’s all I get done the first day we move in, that’s okay because we’re functional for meals. Finding these first 3 categories in the kitchen helps me determine where the second tier of items is.
I find pot holders, hot pads and strips in the drawer near the stove. The time I need an ahot pad is when I have a hot pot and it’s on the stove. In my current house we have a stove top and a separate wall oven. They are 8 feet apart. I have decided to put the hot pads in two different drawers; one near the stove and one near the oven.
I put the pots and pans in the cupboard near the stove. There are usually 1 or 2 cupboards near the stove large enough to store pots and pans. Place the lids in the cupboard with the pots and pans.
There is usually one tall, thin cabinet near the stove where you can place cookie sheets, cooling racks, and cutting boards. If you don’t have a dedicated cabinet, you can often raise a shelf in a regular cabinet to hold the cookie sheets. If possible, store cookie sheets, cutting boards, etc. vertically, as they take up less space and are easier to access by simply sliding out what is needed.

I prefer to keep my spices in a two-tier lazy susan in the cabinet where I cook. This cabinet has been a corner cabinet on the wall with an oven in my last 3 houses. Spices are conveniently located for cooking, but not too close to the stove (too close to the stove can affect the shelf life of the spices).
I always look for dish towels and washcloths near the sink. There are often oddly small drawers or cabinets near the sink. I put towels and cloths in there.
My goal is to be able to grab a towel while standing at the sink (usually with wet hands after realizing someone took a dish towel and didn’t put out a new one. argh!). In a house with extremely limited closet space, I put towels in a basket sitting on the counter near the sink.

The third phase units fill in around the first and second phase units. You may not have room for all your tertiary units. You need to assess your “stuff” and the space you have and then prioritize.
I have had to store equipment in other rooms of the house. It’s not ideal, but it was the only solution in this situation. (Also, I really don’t use the waffle iron or blender as often, if at all, as I do the cups, dishes, and pots and pans.)
Although I’ve listed the pantry groceries in step three, I’m considering where to store those items in step 1 and step 2. If you have a pantry, then yes!, it’s a no-brainer. But if you don’t have a pantry, find a cabinet big enough to hold cans, jars, and boxes.
You want these items to sit between your shoulders and knees for easy access. I keep cookies and potato chips on the highest shelf (a deterrent that makes it harder to just mindlessly grab them).

Place lighter, seasonal items on the top shelves and above that impossible fridge. I put seasonal serving bowls and dishes above the fridge because once a year I can handle getting to that stupid cupboard.
I also put lightweight plastic storage containers, plastic serving bowls, and my plastic strainer on the higher shelf. If they fall off when I reach for them, it might hurt if it hits me, but it won’t hurt if it hits me.
I put heavy things on the lowest shelves. When these items fall, I want them to be closer to the ground to minimize damage. I also put things I rarely use on the awkward bottom shelves.
Ideally, you want to place units in usable zones, e.g. baking area includes bowls, mixer, flour, sugar, cookie cutter, etc. This has been possible for me in about 50% of my kitchens. But that’s still the goal, if possible.

In my current kitchen, I have a pull-out lunchbox zone. Since 3 kids and husband eat lunch every day, we have
Lunch box stuff. Having everything in one place makes packing 20 lunch boxes a week a little easier for everyone.
When my children were younger, it was important to have a craft area in the kitchen. They could paint or glue while I worked in the kitchen. I wanted them to do these messy activities at the kitchen table.
When I didn’t have the luxury of a closet for crafting, I stuck a rolling drawer in the corner. Once upon a time, a plastic tub with coloring books and crayons was all I could fit in the tiny kitchen.
